You wake up, look in the mirror, and notice a bright red eye staring back at you. Your mind probably jumps straight to pink eye, and you might even start planning to stay home from work or keep your kids out of school.
However, at Bethel Vision Care, we want you to know that redness doesn’t always mean an infection. Many common conditions, like dry eye disease, seasonal allergies, blocked tear ducts, and even a simple broken blood vessel, are often misdiagnosed as pink eye. Getting a comprehensive eye exam is important for understanding what might be going on.
How to Tell If Your Symptoms Are Pink Eye
Typical Signs of Pink Eye
Pink eye (also called conjunctivitis) is a term to describe the inflammation of the thin tissue covering the white part of your eye, called the conjunctiva. It comes in 3 main types: Viral and bacterial, which are contagious, and allergic conjunctivitis, which isn’t contagious.
You may have pink eye if you notice any of these:
- Color changes: Red or pink appears in the white part of your eye.
- Eye discharge: A watery or thick yellow crust forms on your lashes.
- Sensation: An itchy feeling that makes you want to rub your eyes (which is most common with allergic conjunctivitis).
Clues That Point to Other Issues
Sometimes your discomfort points to a completely different problem. You might notice, for example, that the redness stays trapped in 1 tiny corner of your eye instead of coating the whole area, which might be a sign of a broken blood vessel. If you notice any of these signs, it’s more likely you’re dealing with a separate issue:
- Timeline: Symptoms develop very slowly.
- Location: Redness appears in only 1 spot.
- Unusual signs: Thick discharge happens without any redness at all.
Everyday Irritants and Dry Eye Syndrome
Seasonal Allergies
A windy day can blow pollen through the air and straight into your face, which can cause symptoms like itchiness and redness. You might assume it is an infection, but it’s possible that you’re just allergic to something in the air.
If you have allergies, you’ll probably notice a very intense instinct to rub your eyes because they feel so itchy. Allergies also tend to affect both eyes at once, whereas pink eye often begins in 1 eye and spreads to the other. The last signal that you may have allergies and not pink eye is that allergies cause your eye to produce clear watery tears, not a thick crust.
Chronic Dryness
Your tears normally work like a protective shield against the outside world, but sometimes those tears dry up before they can do their job. This lack of moisture often leads to dry eye disease and leaves a scratchy feeling that can bother you all day long.
If you have dry eye, the irritation will bother you almost all the time instead of appearing overnight like pink eye.
Eyelid Problems and Blocked Tear Ducts
Swollen Eyelids
Tiny oil glands line the edges of your eyelids, right near the lashes. These little glands sometimes fill with debris and swell up. This swelling can cause a heavy feeling in your eyelids and make your vision blur slightly. If you have a blocked tear duct, you may notice excessive tearing or discharge. Flaky debris along the lashes may point more toward a condition like blepharitis.
Viruses and Broken Blood Vessels
Viruses
If you’ve got a runny nose or scratchy throat along with red eyes, it might all be connected. Viral illnesses like the common cold can also affect your eyes, making them look irritated or inflamed. Because the symptoms can overlap, an eye doctor is important to help pinpoint what’s really going on.
Harmless Red Spots
You might look in the mirror and see a bright red patch on the white part of your eye. While this can feel scary at first, a tiny, broken blood vessel often heals on its own. That being said, it’s helpful to know the signs of serious eye emergencies. If you experience severe pain along with redness, you should see an eye doctor right away.
